Why are there gaps in pavement

When something changes temperature its volume changes. When something is hot it is larger than when it is cold. Everything has a different rate of size change.
When pavement is laid they leave gaps in the pavement so that the slabs can expand and contract with the seasons. Without the gaps the concrete would buckle and crack when it got too hot out or when the water underneath the road freezes and expands.

indeed. In fact, I landed on this question while trying to find a way of getting rid of them since they dug the sand underneath the pavement leaving hollow area in which the blocks eventually fall.
