Why are there gaps in pavement

Answers:
When something changes temperature its volume changes. When something is hot it is larger than when it is cold. Everything has a different rate of size change.

When pavement is laid they leave gaps in the pavement so that the slabs can expand and contract with the seasons. Without the gaps the concrete would buckle and crack when it got too hot out or when the water underneath the road freezes and expands.
