The most popular animal, excluding the human, would be the dog, if you are not talking about a specific animal. However, there are more households with a pet cat than a pet dog in the United States, the dog is still widely considered the most popular animal.
It is hard to say. I think maybe the most popular animal in our world today could be Shamu (from SeaWorld). Again, it is hard to say.
It depends on where you live. I've never heard of Shamu, for example, and I wouldn't be surprised if nobody in the country where I live has heard of him or her.
If you live in Edinburgh, the most famous animal is probably Greyfriar's Bobby. But not if you live in Nairobi, where two man-eating lions living in the Tsavo area are probably more famous than any other animals. And so on.
Dolly, the cloned sheep, is also a very famous animal.
Jumbo, the famous circus elephant, has the honor of giving his name to the English language for anything that's really, really BIG.
Historically, work animals like horses, oxen and mules, and food animals like chickens and cows are a lot more important and famous than any of those others.
