How serious is a Lamictal rash

Answers:

Answer

A lamictal rash is an allergic reaction. Like all allergic reactions, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome can occur. This is potentially fatal. So the lamictal rash is as serious as rash can get. After checking with a doctor to make sure you really do have the lamictal rash, you need to quit taking lamictal immediately. If you don't the chances of you developing Stevens-Johnson Syndrome increases greatly.

At the middle of my 3rd week of taking the lamictal, I was feeling some flu like symptoms:
- Stiff head and headache - Slight backache - Increasingly severe insomnia
The night before my main breakout, I noticed some bumps on my shoulder that appeared quite a bit more red than usual. The next day when I awoke, the rash had progressed considerably. I did not take the lamictal and went right to the ER.
At the ER I continued to get the blotchy red rash all over my body and face. They gave me 60mg of Prednisone, an antihystimine, and some Vicoden. After about 6 hours I had peaked, and was beginning to return to normal.
The doctor at the ER had told me to take 40mg of Prednisone the next day, 30mg, 20mg, and then finially 10mg on the fourth day.
I increasly appeared to be returning to normal.
Unfortuneatly, the titrate was too short.
About 2 days after I was off the Prednisone, I got a severe relapse. Became VERY red again and itched incessantly all over my body. It was hardly bareable. I had to goto the ER again. They put me on IV as I was dehydrated.
The itching rash went from blotchy to solid, and i was scratching my body all day and all night. It was terrible. They put me on a 12 day titrate 40mg for 3 days, 30mg for 3 days, 20mg, 10mg, etc. On the 4th day I was finially not going insane with the itching, although it was still always there, I could actually concentrate on completing a task. I was also using a Prednisone body cream which I applied to itchy areas twice a day. Hopefully this continues to improve, I am currently on day 5.

I was on 100 mg of lamictal for a few months, then developed the blotchy, hard-to-see, insanely itchy rash over my whole body. I was taken off the medicine immediately, it has been 2 weeks and I still have signs of the rash.

I'm so glad I didn't have any serious reaction to Lamictal. I started out on a really low dose and got a rash on my leg. The rash is fairly minor, about the size of my fist and it itches like crazy. I did see the Dr. right away he looked at it and it is no big deal, I just use itch cream on it for a few days and it goes away, it pops up from time to time, like today. I'm sorry it affects some people negatively, because I really like this medication. It has worked a lot better than Depakote ever did. I went from 104 lbs to 164 with the Depakote and was told I could gain that much weight every year for many years. I researched drugs myself and stumbled across lamictal and begged my Dr. to let me try it and it has been great. I take a total of 300 mg a day and have done so for about 2 years now and losing weight is possible while on lamictal, I must note here that the Lamictal did not cause the weight loss, but it did not stop me from losing the weight and it did not cause any weight gain. Lamictal is great for those who can take it, it is worth the try, but you have to use common sense and if something feels wrong see a Dr. I liked hearing that you jumped up and went straight to the Dr. I have heard of some people waiting til they are near death to do anything about it. As with all things common sense is very important. Good luck finding a medication that works for you. For others looking for a medication that is right for them don't give up, just because one doesn't work doesn't mean another won't. All medications can have side effects and most of the time the side effects suck, but hey I am better, so I can live with some itching, because mine is not severe.

Sunday 2-15-2009 my 39 year old sister-in-law died suddenly. She was on Lacamital 100mg. We are unaware of any rash what so ever. She had only taken the medication for 6 days. It appears she was allergic. The Dr.s feel her case was rare. This medication made a sad yet very alive person have complete liver failure, lungs colapsed, two heart attacks and kidney failure. On the sixth day. We were told there are still research being done on this medication so please be aware. We are mourning she left behind a husband, two daughters, and four brothers who are so sad to have her go. I would be conserned about long term affects you might want to research. The funneral is today.
