Your best and probably also fail-proof bet in either acquiring or finding out your Alien Registration Number (A number) is to contact your local USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) office. You can call them, e-mail them or even walk in (if you're willing to stand in lines) and ask all kinds of questions. They will guide you in the right direction.
Once you apply for an EAD card (employment authorization card) as an international student you will get the A#. The number will appear on the EAD card.
There are other cases in which you get an A#, for example when you get an H1B Visa.
