It sounds like it's a canker sore. They are sometimes pretty painful, but aren't anything to worry about. They usually last about a week or less. If it doesn't go away or concerns you, go see a doctor or dentist.

Yes, it can. Sometimes these are called "cankor sores." They hurt like heck. Your "bite" must be out and so you should see your dentist. Also a sharp tooth can irritate the tongue and all that needs is for your dentist to grind it down (takes just a minutes or two and no need for freezing.)
